Peanut Butter Chocolate Smoothie Bowl

How are smoothie bowls so photogenic? I mean COME ON, how good do these look!?

I’ve also been working on upping my food photography game, so hopefully that’s part of it too. But let’s be real, you could photograph this with a potato camera and it would still look delish!

This smoothie gets filed under honorable mentions. I’m mostly sharing it because I’m proud of the pretty picture I took, but the smoothie was too liquidy. I tried putting banana slices on top and they plopped right to the bottom. So fail.

As I mentioned before, I’m working on getting better at food photography. When I first started, oh gosh, my pictures were some kind of bad. Even then, I took enough shots that I could always find one or two that worked. Well, now that I’ve had a lot of practice, I’m trying to take my time to carefully set up each shot.

Some things I’m working on are:

  • the arrangement of items in the picture
  • lighting
  • camera settings
  • framing of the shot
  • using props

I’ve also purchased a roll of marble wrapping paper – because, am I really a blogger if I don’t have ONE marble surface? So, I’d been thinking about getting some kind of marble background, and this just happened to be on sale so I grabbed it, and it’s actually working out really well! I’m actually so lame that I’m pretty hyped about it haha! But, it also means that our kitchen table is now a designated blogging photography station, because you can’t really eat on wrapping paper and I’m not about to waste a good piece! ;). But we rarely use our dining table unless there are guests over anyway!

As you can see in the pictures above, almost every aspect of each picture is intentional: the spoons are placed where I want them, the peanuts are sprinkled all over, etc. When you do that, it takes a good picture & turns it into a great one. I’m really excited about this, it makes taking pictures so much more fun and rewarding!

In case you’re curious and want to learn more about food photography, I made a post called 5 Most Important Tips for Food Photography. I urge you to check it out if you do any kind of photography though!

Alright, on to the recipe! This is a peanut butter, chocolate & banana smoothie bowl! Enjoy & have fun!

Peanut Butter Chocolate Smoothie Bowl

Peanut Butter Chocolate Smoothie Bowl

A protein packed smoothie bowl with chocolate, peanut butter and banana

Serves 1-2

For the smoothie:
1 banana
1 cup milk
1 scoop vanilla protein powder
1 tbsp cocoa powder
1 tsp honey
2 tbsp peanut butter
2-4 ice cubes

1 tbsp chocolate chips (chopped)
1 tbsp peanuts
1/2 banana, sliced

For the drizzle (optional)
1 tbsp peanut butter
1 pinch cocoa powder

Step 1: Toss all your ingredients (for the smoothie) into a blender & blend until smooth. Add more ice if it is too watery, and more milk if it is too thick, although thick is good for smoothie bowls.

Step 2: Pour into a bowl. Add the selection of toppings onto the smoothie, be creative, make it pretty!

Step 3 (optional): In a microwave safe dish, combine and heat the drizzle ingredients for 15-30 seconds, just enough to make them more soft. Dip a spoon into your warm drizzle and swing it back and forth over your smoothie bowl, creating lines of peanut buttery chocolate drizzle. And there you have it, a pretty & delicious, protein packed smoothie bowl!

Don’t forget to take lots of pictures of your beautiful creation! What’s your favourite smoothie bowl?
